Guinness World Records 50 Best Franchises

Guinness World Records has recently created a list of the 50 greatest video game franchises. These franchises were chosen by the voting of gamers.

“We decided to take a different approach with this list than we did in the previous edition,” said aGuinness World Records’ spokesperson in a statement. “Instead of asking developers, industry insiders and journalists to rank their favorite titles, we approached a different kind of expert: the players themselves! We are confident that this ‘top 50′ more accurately reflects the tastes of the average gamer and not just the critics.”

Here are the top 10 best selling games from the month of December of 2009:

Wii — New Super Mario Bros., Nintendo, 2.82M

Wii — Wii Fit Plus, Nintendo, 2.41M

Wii — Wii Sports Resort w/ MotionPlus, Nintendo, 1.79M

360 — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision, 1.68M

PS3 — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision, 1.12M

Wii — Wii Play w/ remote, Nintendo, 1.01M

Wii — Mario Kart w/ wheel, Nintendo, 936,100

360 — Assassin’s Creed II, Ubisoft, 783,100

360 — Left 4 Dead 2, Electronic Arts, 728,500

DS — Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Nintendo, 656,700

“The best-selling game of the month was New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which also captures the third spot on the annual top 10 list for 2009,” said Anita Frazier, NPD Group analyst. “6 of the top 10 games totaling 20.8 million units for the year were on the Wii platform as compared to 4 last year at 19 million units.”

For the Nintendo Wii December was a very successful month having six of the top ten best selling games being for the Wii. Three of the highest selling games were for the Xbox 360 and there was only one game in the top ten for both the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo DS.

New Releases for the Week

The releases for this week include a good variety of various games. If you are a PlayStation 3 gamer you can look in to the co op shooter game by Electronic Art’s “Army of Two: The 40th Day”. Also, to get you excited for the upcoming olympics you can play “Vancouver 2010: Official Video Game of the Olympic Winter Games.” For the Wii, you can try out the game by Konami, “Walk It Out.” For the Xbox 360, along with the two games that are being released for the PS3, the HD remake of Serious Sam is coming out. Along with these games, there are some other good ones coming out for other consoles.

November Hardware and Software Sales

The following are the hardware sales from the month of November:

DS — 1.70M
Wii — 1.26M
Xbox 360 — 819,500
PlayStation 3 — 710,400
PSP — 293,900
PlayStation 2 — 203,100

Because of the Christmas season, I think that the hardware sales are going to steadily increase for a little while as there are probably a lot of kids with these consoles on their Christmas list.

“All hardware systems realized an increase over October but one would expect that from seasonality alone,” said Group analyst Anita Frazier. “More positive economic news combined with ‘frugal fatigue’ could positively impact industry sales during these last weeks of the holiday season.”

It comes as no surprise to any one which game was going to come out on top.

“While this year’s top-selling item bested last year’s by 283%, it couldn’t make up for softness elsewhere,” said Frazier. “The top 50 games this year sold 5% less units than did the top 50 last year.”

New Releases for the Week

As you may know, the last few weeks of the year are going to have of a pretty steady stream of games being released. The reason for this is quite obvious. It is the holiday season so all of the developers and producers are looking for the way to make the most money which is during the holiday season. This week, new games are coming out for the PlayStation 3, the Wii, the Xbox 360, the PlayStation Portable, the Nintendo DS and the PC. While there may not be any really big titles coming out this week, there is a pretty decent amount of games being released this week. If your bored, check out one of these new games or go purchase one of these games and keep it as a Christmas present for one of your friends.

Taking it’s rightful spot at number one, Madden NFL 2010, does not come as a surprise to very many people. There is a possibility of an upcoming drop in game sales which is already beginning to worry people. Anita Frazier, NPD group analyst spoke about this issue considering Guitar Hero 5 and The Beatles: Rock Band are new games.

“With the introduction of Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 in September, a lot of folks have inquired about the performance of these titles and the music/dance genre,” said Frazier. “While sales of this genre are down 46% year-to-date, unit sales are down much less because lower prices are playing into the dollar sales decline. It’s still the third best-selling genre for the year after General Action and Multiple/Other Sports (where Wii Fit resides).”
